* Using a large drywall saw cut the vertical sides of the notch. (These saws are also handy for cutting out door and window openings after the drywall are installed.)
* Cut the face paper along the bottom of the notch using a utility knife. Snap the waste piece backward to break the core, and then cut through the back paper.
